David Borkmann Releases Debut EP "Mercury"

David Borkmann is a promising young producer from the West Coast of Sweden. David's sound is derived from many different influences. The rock and funk he played as a drummer in his former bands, the classical music he played on the piano as a child, and the deep house music that streamed from his DJing older brother's room. The 'Mercury EP' is his debut solo release, coming on the heels of his recent remixes of Eat More Cake, Avatars and The Berndt.

'The Mercury EP' will be released on July 12th on Beatport, and July 26th at all other stores.

Praise For Faded Paper Figures' Sophomore Album "New Medium"

New Medium was released on May 25th and the blogosphere is already buzzing about Faded Paper Figures' latest release.

The band achieved an astounding TWO song appearances on the Hype Machine Most Popular Chart in the SAME WEEK ("Invent It All Again" and "North By North").

See what bloggers are saying:

“a bit pashy pit, a bit death cab and a lot of awesome.” – Together In Digital Dreams

"Invent," is sumptuous, crush worthy indie pop that's perfect for doing the indie shuffle to, holding hands, or making out. The sound track for summer just popped up on your Ipod...enjoy it.” – The Pop Stereo

“And if the tune is any indication of their ability to create some absolutely downright tooth ache inducing electronica coded sugary indie pop, well, sign me up.” – Pulp And Circumstance

“Glad music like this is still being made. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best policy.” – Off The Radar

“4/5 Stars. Faded Paper Figures are creative innovators and talented musicians. The depth of the instrumentals, the tricky pairing of electronica with serious subjects, and the winsome vocals and harmonies make ‘New Medium’ not just a big step in the right direction for the band, but for all the genre-hopping artists that are beginning to fill the industry.” – The Album Project

“The band’s new album New Medium is set for release next week, and if the rest sounds as good as “Invent It All Again” we’ll have something special on our hands. It’s bubbly indie-pop electronica and it makes me want to listen to more.” – Tympanogram

“Ladytron and Postal Service just made sweets-weet lovin', here's their baby..” – Everything Is Chemical

Currently it is at #67 and climbing!

See what some bloggers are saying about the song, off of their new album New Medium, due out 5/25:

“a bit pashy pit, a bit death cab and a lot of awesome.” – Together In Digital Dreams

Faded Paper Figures Release New Album "New Medium" And Mp3 For Download

In their much-anticipated second album, New Medium, Faded Paper Figures return with a richer, fuller sound, even as they maintain all of Dynamo's indie-tronica charm. Fans of the band will be happy to hear all of the familiar blips, harmonies, and intellectual pop-references, but with even more life and energy this time around. Striking melodies, lyrical images, and classic pop forms--New Medium's lush electronica feels both intimately familiar and astonishingly new.

Praise for Faded Paper Figures' previous album, Dynamo:

“A perfect balance of upbeat and soothing electronics . . . clever, intriguing at times, and even beautiful” --National Public Radio

“One of 2009’s new music must-haves. . . . With not a hint of generic audio, their entire first attempt called ‘Dynamo,’ lacks only one thing: a follow-up album.” --New York Post

“Song of the Day…so relaxing, free-flowing, and effecting” --KEXP, Seattle

“I’m amazed nobody has snatched them already. It counts with twelve tracks that go from soft mellow acoustic infused songs to more upbeat happy go-lucky electronically complemented tracks that thru it all melt together to make a great crisp autumn’s morning soundtrack.” –Tilt Music Blog

“Grab your mittens and a portable stereo kids, Faded Paper Figures have made the most wonderful winter wooksie since Belle & Sebastian’s track of the same name. All rosy cheeks and saccharine vocals this is one to stave off the festive blues for sure.” –Subba-Cultcha

“The music of Faded Paper Figures sounds like a love story that you know only happens in movies, but at one point - maybe when you were a bit younger - you believed it existed. I can’t think of a movie that fulfills what I’m trying to describe, but its a movie where the writer has taken great care with every detail so that it all fits in place to bring about a conclusion of absolute magic and awe.” –AudioMuffin.com

Music featured on: Grey's Anatomy, MTV's "The Real World"

Last week super-blog Too Many Sebastians posted about New City artist Relation and their new single 'Optimistic.'

Check out the piece HERE.

Quotes:

"they are making some really nice, super-stylish and intellegent pop music. Not much of that floating around these days…."

"wait till you hear what they’ve [Cassette Club] done with ‘Optimistic’, it’s quite stunning. Like, jaw-droppingly good."

Praise For Evan Voytas' "I Run With You, Spirit Animal"

“I have a feeling this guy is going to become really big” – Indie Here

“I can just say that its fucking innovative, and that you’ve never heard anything else quite like it…”- Blastercase

“..captures a dreamy west coast pop landscape, where the young and fearless look up to the stars above and follow their dreams into the unknown.” – Impressionable Youth

“With compliments like “american version of m83″ Evan Voytas is poised to build some hype this year.” – The Up Turn

“Evan Voytas has made songs that are all-revealing, all-enveloping and altogether sharper, and more direct, than a thousand other sonic scrabblers. Or The XX. Wonderful.” – A New Band A Day

“More importantly though, the song is a stormer. It sounds cheap – by which I mean it is the delicious sound of a young man who has time, talent and no external monetary influences.”- A New Band A Day

Relation's Single 'Optimistic' Out Now, With Remixes For Download

‘Optimistic’ is Relation’s second single from their debut album ‘Fear Of Night’. Critically acclaimed in Electronic music industry circles and buoyantly welcomed in the Indie sphere, Essex boys Andrew Leary and Oliver Keech have developed an alternative, unique sound by combining meaningful lyrics with synth-pop to create both emotional depth and electronic rhythms. Although the compositions are truly progressive and they embrace a futuristic approach to their productions, their music has brought comparisons to New Order and the Pet Shop Boys as well as a wink to Depeche Mode.

"How can we play the rent when the money's spent?"

‘Optimistic’ melds contemporary and classic electronic pop sounds, entwining bubbling synths into a social criticism of bankrupt modern Britain where meritocracy is dead and financial and emotional hardship can be all pervading. Oliver’s pleading and compelling vocals give the track a stand-out edge that should instantly provoke genuine interest and emotion in the listener. Cassette Club’s remix is a storm of soft electro combined with delicious disco while the Diogenes Club stay true to their sound and deliver a smooth remix with their uplifting Balearic signature. The band Eat More Cake gives a powerful resonance to the lyrics with atmospheric sounds and exoticism. Laserdisco, one of Andrew Leary’s experimental projects, is class dub with a dark eerie feel and Stephen Lopkin provides a kooky tech-house remix with heavy underground influences. Last but not least is Soundexile’s bouncy deep house remix that echoes the original’s thoughtful lyrics – perfect for dance floor warm-ups.

Stereogum Debuts New Evan Voytas Song and Video

Last week Stereogum premiered Evan Voytas' video for the new single "I Run With You, Spirit Animal." The video, directed by Carlos Charlie Perez (Vampire Weekend, Fang Island) can be viewed here:

Evan Voytas is an LA-based singer/multi-instrumentalist. Born in rural Pennsylvania, Evan was raised on the oldies, listening to his father's cassette tapes of Elvis and the Righteous Brothers. As a teenager, he discovered jazz. At age 18, he moved to Harlem where he immersed himself in various religious texts and 70's new age paperbacks. He grew a beard, moved to the desert, moved back, shaved the beard, played lead guitar for a few pop acts, toured the world, moved to a farmhouse on a dirt road in Pennsylvania, started recording music, and finally ended up in Los Angeles.

Since then, Voytas has released a series of self-produced EPs and singles. His latest single, "I Run With You, Spirit Animal," is a 3-minute race through a magical realm. Set to a score of soaring synths, fun guitars, and fake-ass drums, Evan's lyrics typically address "feeling good" or "feeling bad," with underlying mystical themes of the unknown, nature, and outer space.

Press:

"If you're not listening to Evan Voytas, you're seriously missing out... and I'm not just saying that. You're missing out on an art form here." - Circles Of Concrete

"Don’t sleep on him any longer, if this kid continues to write songs as good as “I Live This Life Here For You”, he could become our American version of M83." - In Flight At Night

“[Evan Voytas] creates strange synth-pop/space-disco outings that feel danceable but private and insular.” - Stereogum

January 2010 Mix!

Happy New Year. In the tradition of great promotional mixes, I wanted to send you all a mix of the artists we at New City have been working with over the last few months.

I remember the days in college being pumped to get a free label sampler at a concert or a music store (remember those?!). I discovered so much great new music through those compilations. My hope is that in some small way we can do the same with our monthly samplers.

There really is something on the January mix for everyone, from folk rock, to electro-pop to jazz-infused indie rock. Artists are represented from Los Angeles to Brighton to Moscow.

For more info on any of these acts (interview requests, photos, tour press, etc) please contact me.

Satellite Crush Release "Arrows of Eros" EP, Mp3 For Download

A backwards British Invasion....

After graduating from art school in Ohio, Elliot moved across the Atlantic to London, England with hopes of starting a band. Heavily influenced by British music, and determined to follow this path, he barely made ends meet by bar tending at a nearby pub and busking on the streets. In the extreme loneliness that followed, he spent much of his spare time writing songs in his small studio flat in central London. Having just left the girl with whom he was in love with, naturally she became the subject of many songs to follow.

Elliot began playing open mic shows around the city, eventually playing several solo gigs before forming a small band with several other Londoners he met at a show. Despite some promising success this however, proved to be short lived following some members' habits. In an attempt to escape the loneliness and addiction that London so warmly embraced, Elliot moved back to the states eventually planting himself in Los Angeles.

Shortly after moving to L.A, Satellite Crush was formed, basing their material around the songs that were written in London. The name came from a reference to the subject of the songs, the girl left behind, who he had minimal contact with while in London through emails, and occasionally a phone call, she was his "satellite crush".

Press:

"fashioning the dreamy, misty-eyed pop that could have accompanied thousands of lonely, late-night rides on the Tube in the 1990s.....the songs are fleshed out, echoing, at moments, warm and familiar material from the Cure and the Dandy Warhols." - Kevin Bronson, Buzzbands LA

“clean, heartfelt, well produced and a nice departure from the deluge of cooler-than-thou post-punk emanating from LA right now.” – Richard Thomas, Indie Music Examiner

The Diogenes Club's New EP '979' Streaming And Video Premiere

Following their thrilling success, the Diogenes Club returns for its second release combining Dob and Paul's effortless partnership. Their first EP 'Do You Know How To Feel It?' gained outstanding reviews online through portals such as Pitchfork, Sound Advice, Pop Stereo and The Hype Machine as well as being played by Pete Tong on Radio 1 and being described as 'the best I've heard in ages' by Andy Warburton (Nu Cool Show, Galaxy). Once again, it results in an excellent EP combining flair, tenacity and charm.

The '979' EP gathers 3 new exciting compositions. Spacey and hypnotic 'Tie Ourselves Around' woos a storm of emotion with bass-like resonances. Highs and lows are characterized by unfathomed, meaningful lyrics. The moodiness is broken by 'I Could Try To Explain' - an instant balearic feel-good track. It's driven and happy-go-lucky tempo are embellished with lush vocals striding with rhythm. Finally, 'Tete' is an atmospheric lullaby with eerie and delicate patterns that provoke a subtle, yet compelling uplift.
